Thomas Sheraton 1751-1806

Sheraton was brought up in Durham and trained as a journeyman cabinet maker. He came to London in 1790 and had several addresses including Davies Street, Wardour Street & Golden Square. His famous "Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book" was published in the 1790s and in 1803 he also published the "Cabinet Dictionary". Many pieces in the "Sheraton" style were constructed in satinwood and the square tapering leg was an important feature in furniture designs of this period. Exotic wood crossbandings and painted decoration also feature in his work.
